This work is a series of windows on the past, gazes turned to the simplest memories of the most important element for my creative dimension: the sea. Only one percussionist, a set of 6 Timpani of different sizes. This work, rather than a score, is a real short story about evocative force. Surfaces, depths, dotted beauties and then expectations and imagination. All this, which completely fills my life and my mind, always in an inevitable relationship with the mood of the sea.

Evoluzioni is a collection of different haiku. Each page represents an independent fragment of a general drawing. The concept of evolution in this case refers to movement, the vivid unpredictability of the form even in its most microscopic dimension and the search for a connection, for an ever deeper interplay between the musicians of the ensemble.

LYRIC OPERA FOR 12 SINGERS AND ORCHESTRA

What is a failure? What does it represent for a human being, what is a human being willing to give up in order to retrace his steps? Just like in Aristophanes' comedy of the same name, Gli Uccelli wants to expose a community to its shame, ridicule acts that are not preceded by appropriate reasoning, by critical and conscious thinking.

BLUE TRACES

Blue Traces focuses on the emotional relation between the individual, the space it navigates, the time that it experiences, the multiple dimensions with which it makes contact while moving. It does so in a collaborative dialogue with technology, using as a starting point the same .gpx data employed for aggregated studies. Instead of combining these data with economic formulas and political statistics, it does so in dialogue with music.

Plurale arises from the desire to find a third way, exactly in the middle, between interpretation and improvisation. the writing and drafting of a thought allows the possibility of more accurate and programmatic management of many formal and dynamic aspects of the group; improvisation instead exacerbates the possibilities of choice and participation of the single component, giving enormous importance to the interpreter, who becomes part of the writing process, introducing in the calculation of the variables all the possibilities of choice and interplay linked to the momentary decision by the 'individual.

Esercizi di Fragilità is a set of piano solo studies designed for the left hand only.
Everyone of them has a very narrative character that makes them appear like tales, inspired by a dreamlike landscape in which time is relative, dictated by the interpreter's reading, just like in a book. This reading is articulated through different levels of immersion. The modulations between one chapter and another are so slow that they get lost in the general memory of the plot.

2018 - Absolute First Prize at Palermo Classica Competition 2018

Inspired by Fellini’s movie Prove d’Orchestra, this Concerto has inside multiple dimensions where chamber and symphonic levels are engaging a battle. Dynamics are extreme and the listeners have to switch between opposite feelings. The piano is prepared with cotton, its sound is soft and tiny. This work is a continuous dialogue between the different orchestra parts where each instrument tries to emerge out of the surface of a continuous rhythmic ostinato.

Oceani di tempo

Oceani di tempo is an abstract landscape stemming from live recordings captured during two flights in Europe (Berlin/ Palermo and Palermo/Berlin). It is a blend of different acoustic elements: the notes of a cello, the recordings from the planes and all the processed materials coming from both sources. The experience of being in a plane is, for me, an important moment to be alone with my thoughts. It’s a feeling where time and space are not important anymore. A super-slow human landscape where the passengers experience a different perspective of everyday live rhythm.

STUDI DEL SILENZIO

This work for solo flute is a group of studies about breath. Each study is like a super short poem, like an haiku where wind sounds evolve progressively in tuned sounds and viceversa. The performer can choose the time and rhythm as he/she prefers. Even the silences are part of the composition, it’s up to the performer to understand when it’s the right moment to break the silence and let the wind become sound.

This work was designed to express the vision of a living creature. Not clear, not defined, a force capable of shaping its body structure, its mind, something living made of sound. The instruments are always oscillating between a small group of fundamental tones, when they evolve in other forms they completely loose their tuning, becoming breaths, noises or rumbles. The ensemble has a unique sound, counterpoint is reduced to the essentials. This score requires a huge concentration and great interplay skills. It’s maybe the first score where I was asking again to myself new questions about performers and which should be nowadays their role in the music making process.

ATMOSFERE

Atmosfere is a work designed in collaboration with Aladin Ilou and performed live in 2018 at Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena.

The performer is completely surrounded by a dense sound cloud. He/She proceeds within the score with a huge headroom for improvisation, especially about the sound texture evolution. Atmosfere has a deep narrative universe, written in Marzahn (Berlin) in 2016/17, this work was a self observation touching themes like isolation, alienation, desolation, it’s a cold lucid dream where the humanity of an individual tries hard to survive self-destruction.

Ambienti is my first attempt to approach a writing style that was closer than before to a performer perspective. Written like a personal travel diary Ambienti tries to capture many feelings and impressions coming from voyage memories. This score doesn’t want to be an ambient work, the main principles of ambient music are subverted, themes are evident, they force the listeners to pay attention, the ambience is inside, it’s a picture of a landscape formed by memories, every piece is a new possibility of run through a never ending mindscape.

OXYDATION

2016 - Designed and created using the IRCAM software Orchidée for the final exam at Accademia Nazionale di S. Cecilia

Oxydation is designed with an orchestration software named Orchidèe, released by IRCAM to give composers the possibility of an approximation in orchestrating external world sounds. I worked on the percentage of accuracy set by the software. The entire composition is a slow sequence of vertical structures where the approximation accuracy is slowly fading down. exactly like a slow chemical decay process of an element and its observation from changing perspectives.

Particelle aims to create a complex system made up of particles in which there is no evolution but only an exhibition of the delicate beauty that exists in the observation of a detail.

Written for a special Concert dedicated to the masterpiece Three Dances by John Cage at Conservatorio Vincenzo Bellini in Palermo, this work explores the possibilities of masking technique. It’s a performance where the writing technique is designed to achieve a controlled imperfection, pushing, at the same time, the strength and resistance of the two pianists to the extreme limits.

Accordion is an instrument connected with my roots, this concert is one of the first works where I started looking at composition in a narrative way. It’s a sound novel where the main role, played by accordion, is continuously oscillating between solo chamber lyric dimensions and dense atmospherical orchestral panels.
